This thesis explores the ways that spaces and conditions of belonging are created. Beginning with the act of cooking as a method of cultural translation, personal narratives from individuals in the Ithaca community were collected. These stories identified how cultural, oral, and bodily knowledge is exchanged through cooking. The result is a series of ‘double kitchens’ in which two identical kitchens are split by an operable wall that allows individuals to translate their knowledge of technique, stories, and recipes with one another.
